The Stupid American

In my first post I discussed how it is necessary for Americans to unite as a whole with each individual doing there part to help the environment. One of the most significant and simple things in my mind that people could do would be to drive the speed limit!

We all know the similar scenario, we're late for work in the morning, and we want to beat that morning rush. What do we do? We outrageously speed. I'm not going to lie, I know how that goes, I hate being late for school so speeding seems like the most logical option at the time. In actuality speeding will only shave a couple minutes of your daily commute at best.

Just think about it though, we slam that peddle to the floor like a pestilent cockroach we're trying to stamp to death with our foot, and we shoot off down the freeway, and we're going and we're going, and we're convincing ourselves we're going to make it to our destination on time, and then the inevitable happens. You either run into traffic and are forced to slow back down, or you end up behind a person who decides to destroy your life and crush your career by actually driving the speed limit. If life was a golden rainbow without traffic and a little factor called "s#!@ happens," then maybe, just maybe speeding would be efficient.

But, the efficiency of speeding is not what I'm trying to espouse here. Everytime we mash that peddle to the floor we are wasting unnecessary gas. Completely and utterly wasting gas, for no good reason other than to compensate for our own laziness. To make matters worse, I have heard numerous reports of states contemplating raising speed limits to keep up with the average drivers speed, take this article about Texas for example

So please, I just urge you to take a look at the high gas prices and then at how many more pounds of pressure your floor board in your car can support before breaking under the pressure of your foot on the gas peddle. If we can all slow it down to at least the speed limit think about how much gas we can save. Here is great insightful website that I highly recommend reading. It's called Drive 55 and it discusses the positive advantages of slowing down and driving 55. Its definitely worth taking a look at, although yes I do realize driving 55 would be pretty intolerable, because as it is we can barely keep it under 65 without going into a rage induced coma :)

Hello, this is my first ever post and hopefully not my last. As you have probably noticed from the title of my blog, I seem to have a bias towards the American people--and I do. No, I am not some radical extremist preaching eternal damnation of the American people, nor am I an illegal immigrant on a amnesty thirsting power trip. I'm simply a concerned American.

It seems to me that as America is slowly falling apart at the seams, with the: collapse of the housing market, skyrocketing fuel costs, and food prices that are reaching astronomical levels that the American people would finally be sitting up and taking notice. This does not seem to be the case though. Why? This is a question I wrangle with every single day. Sure, people may "take notice," if complaining can be deemed such a thing. Instead it seems as if the American people would rather pass the blame, on to congress, on to the illegal immigrants, or heck even on to Mr. President of the United States.

I'm sure you can agree with me then that passing the blame is merely a defense mechanism we all use to skirt off any real responsibility, because hey, we all have our own problems right? This is in essence is where I believe Americas true problem lies. We as a people--yes we-- are so concerned with our own individual affairs, our own life, our own problems that it prevents us from looking outside of the box and realizing that by banding together we really and truly can make a difference for our country.

How is this possible though, a question I'm sure any logical person is asking themselves. Especially with how the media portrays their definition of help with the almost self appointed congregation of uber wealthy Hollywood elitists including none other than the power couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, and of course Bono the U2 superstar. The media is constantly buzzing about Brad and Angelina's adoptions of needy children, and there escapades to foreign countries, and huge donations. I'm not trying to preach that this is bad by any means. I absolutely believe that these wealthy celebrities who use there wealth and fame to help the less fortunate is a great thing. But, I also think that this gives American's the impression though that they, as an average middle income and less than famous individual could do little to help those underprivledged. Of course only one person can not save the world, thats why I believe American's need to stand up and band together, because it takes and army to make a difference, not just one person.
